Dame," Freeman said. "You know you're not going to be a starter here, and you want to go play more. I respect that. Let us help you get to a place where you're going to play." Hence, that's why the number 13 isn't as scary in reality as it is on paper. Notre Dame lost three safeties in Ajavon, Wal- lace and Khari Gee to the portal, but none of them were in line to start — and that was before the Irish reeled in for- mer All-American Brandon Joseph from Northwestern. Running back C'Bo Flemister? He had fallen behind junior Chris Tyree and a pair of sophomores on the depth chart. Offensive lineman Quinn Carroll? Too much talent up front for him to want to stick around. He'll play right away at Minnesota. The fact that Flemister was the only one to officially hit the portal after the Blue-Gold Game April 23 proved that Freeman is in a good spot with the 2022 roster. Those who are currently enrolled want to stick around a while. Freeman had known since the beginning of the semester that he wasn't going to have Flemister anyway. Now, it's just about knowing how to get that 86 number down to 85. It's some- thing he can take his time with. Some- thing will come up. It always does. ✦
