www.BLUEANDGOLD.com JUNE/JULY 2022 7 FAN FORUM Notre Dame has a few position battles for starting jobs that were nowhere near resolved at the end of spring practice. Which one is the most wide-open competition? Here's what a few Fighting Irish fans had to say on that topic when asked that question on our message board at BlueandGold.com in mid-May: mh2365: Definitely not QB … LOL. PaDomer30: Kicker. thomasna: Most wide-open battle is receiver. I think [graduate student Braden] Lenzy and [sophomore Lorenzo] Styles are set. At least to start the season. I'd love to see Styles on the outside but that's another topic. The fact that 3 receivers could start at the boundary is about as wide open as it gets. Most important starting battle is kicker. onward2victory: No love for [graduate student Avery] Davis? He really came on last season. If he's 100 percent next fall, I expect him to play a big role in this offense. thomasna: I think he'll start once medically cleared and plays a few snaps, but he was out during spring and will be out going into fall camp. I took it as which spot is wide open going into fall camp and to start the season. I don't think Davis will be healthy by then, but I could be wrong. onward2victory: I'm going with backup TE because we all know how much they will use 12 personnel this season. Will it be [junior Kevin] Bauman, [sophomore Mitchell] Evans, [sophomore Cane] Berrong or will true fresh- man [Eli] Raridon show that he's a budding star? The question is how well will they utilize that second TE? OL should be case study No. 1 but we have to trust HH [Harry Hiestand] to find the right 5 out of the top 8 [graduate student Jarrett] Patterson, [sophomore Joe] Alt, [sophomore Blake] Fisher, [graduate student Josh] Lugg, [senior Zeke] Correll, [senior guard Andrew] Kristofic, [junior Tosh] Baker and [junior Michael] Carmody. conjar: Both guard jobs are totally up in the air. But I wouldn't be moving a 1st-round center to guard. Even though the loss of [freshman Joey] Tanona really hurts. I think [freshman Billy] Schrauth has a legit chance to start at one spot. onward2victory: I agree about the G's spots but it's so hard for true freshman to get regular PT along the OL. Alt and Fisher were special cases because they had no other options last season. Schrauth would have to be a Q [Quenton Nelson] type of talent to play on this OL as a true frosh and even Q couldn't crack the lineup as a true frosh. conjar: Agree, except that the starting LG is a placeholder, while the starting RG has had multiple injury problems and no record of playing well at guard. I don't think the OL has any playable depth at OG or OT. I think everyone just expects Harry to build a great line but it's not that easy and not that fast if you don't have the talent. I think Q Nelson could have, and should have, started as a freshman. There was no reason to preserve a year of eligibility with him. And he was surely mature enough to handle it — as are most OL. Seeing the positive energy of the athletes, coaches and even the officiating crew on a nice sunny day at Notre Dame made my day. Coach Freeman was also impressive and brought a very sincere level of confidence to the whole game. I enjoyed watching his interviews and commentary during the whole game, even though Peacock's coverage was dealing with "technical difficulties." QB Steven Angeli was impressive, and I look forward to seeing how his future evolves at ND. I know a few families with the last name of Angeli and they pronounce it "Ang- a-lee" not "Ang-jelly." I would expect ND would have put out preseason roster information with proper pronuncia- tion for each player's name. Can you confirm how Steven Angeli pronounces his last name? Jack L. Schneider Marquette, Mich. Mr. Schneider, according to Notre Dame's official game notes for the 2022 Blue-Gold Game, Angeli's last name is pronounced: "an-JELLY." Either way, it seems like his will be a name to know for Irish faithful at some point over the next four years.
