snapshot RYAN ZIMMERMAN DAY On April 30, Virginia officially retired the No. 11 baseball jersey worn by Ryan Zimmer- man, a UVA Baseball Hall of Fame inductee. He is the first former Cavalier to have his jersey retired by the program. (It was the second number to be retired in Virginia baseball history. Longtime coach and athletic administrator Jim West had his No. 24 retired in 1992 after his 33 years of service to the athletic department including 19 as UVA's head baseball coach.) The ceremony was held in conjunction with the proclamation by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin that April 30 was Ryan Zimmerman Day in the Commonwealth. The first draft pick in Washington Nationals' history, Zimmerman had a 16-year career in professional baseball before retiring after the 2021 season. His professional career was highlighted by the Nationals winning the 2019 World Series. At UVA, Zimmerman was an All-American in 2005, a two-time All-ACC pick and started all 174 games he played for the Cavaliers. In June, the Nationals will follow Virginia's lead when they retire Zimmerman's No. 11 jersey he also wore for that franchise. Pictured is Zimmerman, UVA head coach Brian O'Connor and Zimmerman's son, Henry. The third base bag at Disharoon Park now features a special logo recognizing Zimmerman. "Ryan Zimmerman embodies everything it means to be a Virginia baseball player," O'Connor said. "He's all class in everything he does. The way he played the game on the field, his leadership and professionalism make him special." — Photos by Matt Riley/courtesy UVA athletics
