JUNE 2022 29 The Virginia Athletics Foundation (VAF) was honored to welcome the 1972 Virginia Baseball team back to Charlottesville on April 29–30 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its ACC Championship, the first in the pro- gram's history. They were also the first team to reach the NCAA Tournament. Throughout the weekend, alumni enjoyed time together, reminiscing on fun memories from throughout the years. Alumnus Steve Brindle (Ed '73) planned a gathering for his former teammates on Friday evening and then hosted a brunch at his home on Saturday morning. Later that day, the VAF also hosted a pre-game tailgate for the championship team prior to the Virginia vs. Virginia Tech baseball game. In addition to being part of the record- breaking home crowd at Disharoon Park, the alumni witnessed a dominating 6-3 victory over Virginia Tech and observed the on-field sentimental ceremony to retire the No. 11 jersey in honor of the Virginia Baseball Hall of Famer and World Series Champion Ryan Zimmerman. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin also made an official proclamation to mark April 30, 2022 as Ryan Zimmerman Day in the Commonwealth of Virginia! This historical game day experience was highlighted with the on-field recognition of the 1972 team as fans reflected on the remark- able milestone anniversary. "From the recogni- tion of the 1972 ACC Championship team to the retirement of Ryan Zimmerman's No. 11, Saturday, April 30 was a special day for the University of Virginia baseball program," Head Coach Brian O'Connor shared. "It is always such a pleasure to recognize the significant accomplishments and milestones of players that wore our jersey, and to be able to do so in front of the largest crowd in Disharoon Park history made for a truly memorable day." This is a major change — especially for those of us who have been watching col- lege football for years. Previously, you would have to serve a year of residence before playing. Now, you can enter the transfer portal and be immediately eligible for your next school. Thousands of football players are currently in the transfer portal. That is a significant number. One reason for that number is so many football players have another season of eligibility as a result of COVID-19. As of today, a significant number of football players in the transfer portal have decided to leave their previous school. That means each school needs to replen- ish their roster. However, that becomes difficult because the NCAA's rules restrict a school from signing more than 25 in- coming football players each year. Several schools have signed 25 incoming football players and have ad- ditional scholarships available. These schools want to provide additional athletes with scholarships, but the rules prevent that from happening. The NCAA recently acknowledged this is an issue and approved a waiver that permits schools to sign more than 25 incoming athletes for 2022–23 and 2023–24. Each team just needs to stay within their overall team limit (85). COMPLIANCE CORNER
