RECRUITING NOTES • Sept. 1 marked the first day for prospects in the 2024 class were al- lowed to receive direct contact from college coaches. However, Notre Dame and coaches from across the country have been allowed to have phone calls prior to Sept. 1, but the prospect him- self had to initiate the call, according to NCAA rules. And now, college coaches are able to dial up the players as well as have unlimited text messages with prospects. Before Sept. 1, they were not allowed to have any form of text message communication with them. To our knowledge, Notre Dame con- tacted all of their major targets in the 2024 class — many of them right at midnight — on Sept. 1. They've also contacted a handful of potential pros- pects they may offer in the future. • Many pundits believe that Lilburn (Ga.) Parkview's Mike Matthews, the No. 5 athlete and No. 73 overall player nationally per On3, will end up in the South for college, whether that be at Alabama, Clemson or Georgia. The Notre Dame staff, however, doesn't want to hear any of that. Irish safeties coach Chris O'Leary and Co. have been in the elite prospect's ear often and are working to get him back on campus. "They are a top school," Matthews told On3. "The coaches have energy, I like the fans, and it is a school with great academics. Notre Dame had faith in me before a lot of other schools, and that will always stand out." • When the Cal Golden Bears come to town this weekend, one of their lo- cal prospects will be in town to see the Fighting Irish. That player is Hayward (Calif.) Ten- nyson's Taeshaun Lyons, the No. 28 wide receiver and No. 191 overall pros- pect in America per On3. The four-star recruit was considered a Washington lean early in his recruiting process, but Notre Dame now seems to be the fa- vorite for him, and with his trip this weekend being an official visit it puts the Fighting Irish in a very strong posi- tion to earn his commitment. "The culture and how they go about teaching and growing," Lyons told Blue & Gold Illustrated when asked what he's looking forward to seeing on his official visit. "Also, how they want to use me, the facilities and plans for life after football and the school." Follow @MikeTSinger on Twitter for daily recruiting updates on BlueandGold.com!
