6 NOV. 5, 2022 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED FAN FORUM UP IN ARMS I want you to tell me what major col- lege football team can both ND quar- terbacks start off for? In my humble opinion, there aren't any I can think of! The reason I'm asking is because your magazine keeps telling me how good Drew Pyne is doing; I don't see it! I didn't see it with Tyler Buchner either. They are wonderful kids but they are not talented enough to quarterback one of the most iconic programs in the country! I have been a fan of ND football since 1947 and a football coach for over 50 years! Thank you kindly, Ray Ciarleglio Mr. Ciarleglio, we don't disagree with your assessment. Prior to former walk- on Stetson Bennett leading Georgia to the national championship last season, four of the previous five title winners fea- tured a quarterback that was selected in the first round of the NFL Draft: Tua Tagovailoa of Alabama in 2020, Joe Bur- row of LSU in 2019, Trevor Lawrence of Clemson in 2018 and Deshaun Watson of Clemson in 2016. The other signal-caller to win it during that stretch was Jalen Hurts of Alabama in 2017, and he was drafted in the second round. Notre Dame's stated goal is to win a national championship. To achieve that, they're going to need better quarterback play. AGAINST THE STREAM The coverage by Peacock is really sec- ond rate. It blinks in and out, you have seconds of a black screen, and you can't switch from it to other games. It's sad Notre Dame would subject its loyal fans to this coverage to watch our team. I hope others also complain and we can get rid of this inferior coverage. A. Bryan Campanaro NO MORE GUARANTEE GAMES I have seen where $1 million or so is paid to a team like UNLV when they come to play at Notre Dame. How about a team like Alabama or Clemson or a Big Ten school. What is that arrangement? RJ Rabensteine Colfax, Ind. Guarantee games — when one uni- versity pays another an exorbitant flat fee to play a football game on the road with no return game — have been a com- mon practice in college football for a long time. Such contests are typically mu- tually beneficial . The host school fills out its nonconference schedule while the visiting team, usually from a less- prestigious league, cashes a big check that helps the overall bottom line of its athletic department. Nonconference matchups between two Power Five teams are generally arranged as a home-and-home series with no payment required by either school. Each team gets to fill its stadium and, in turn, its coffers. Over the next 12 years, the Fighting Irish have scheduled home-and-home series with Ohio State (2022-23), Texas A&M (2024-25), Arkansas (2025 and 2028), Michigan State (2026-27), Alabama (2029-30) and Michigan (2033-34). Box 1007, Notre Dame, IN 46556 or e-mail to: sdowney@comanpub.com Notre Dame's offensive struggles have been a consistent topic of discussion among Irish fans. Here's part of a conversation from our message board at BlueandGold.com, following offensive coordinator Tommy Rees' weekly media availability leading up to the Syracuse game. 53green: I think it's obvious that Tommy is trying to run as sophisticated an offense as possible and hope that the players are somehow quick adapters. KevinPS: Switch between five speeds of running and calling plays doesn't sound like an ideal way to get into a "rhythm." "They can pick up signs in a (no huddle) sometimes." Yes, by all means coach, let's fool the other DC. I have no idea how teams that use one pace all the time do it … scipiospinks: That 2-back explanation is something. UNLV and Stanford … slow, bad defenses, are able to take away that formation based on how they defend it? You're talking about giving a track star who can run and catch more snaps than a mediocre TE coming off a foot injury, and those teams are able to keep it from being an advantage? I would love to know how. TylerHorka: More context on this … Rees basically admitted to offering up a word salad. This was the end of that answer … "I'm trying not to give too much here. It's a hard question to answer honestly." scipiospinks: Which just means he's hiding something? It's not a secret that the game is about athletes in space. If we didn't want to show the world something then it potentially cost us a game against a terrible team. I'm not trying to read too much into this, but I went from perplexed on why we haven't used it since it was so effective against UNC to concerned. FROM THE WEBSITE .com .com Games against Group of Five teams like UNLV have become a staple on Fighting Irish football schedules. PHOTO BY CHAD WEAVER
