BURLAGE T ommy Tremble picked a nice way to celebrate National Tight Ends Day Oct. 23, when the sec- ond-year Carolina Pan- thers tight end scored his first touchdown of the season and the third of his NFL career on a 29-yard pass from quarterback PJ Walker. Playing his second season with the Pan- thers, Tremble made good on his only target of the game in a 21-3 upset of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tremble's touchdown came in the fourth quarter and gave the Panthers a three-score advantage. "I was just trying to throw to [Trem- ble] on a higher angle up the field and put enough air on it so he can run up under it," Walker explained to reporters after that game. "He made a play and scored." The catch was Tremble's longest of the season and the second longest of his NFL career for the 2021 third-round draft pick. ALWAYS OVERSHADOWED Known primarily at Notre Dame (2018-20) as run blocker and a comple- mentary backup to future third-round draft pick Cole Kmet in 2019 and Fresh- man All-American Michael Mayer in 2020, Tremble raised some eyebrows when he unexpectedly entered the 2021 NFL Draft after his junior season. Tremble, who had 35 career catches for 401 yards and 4 touchdowns at Notre Dame, decided to go pro without a strong statistical profile. He boosted his stock at Notre Dame's pro day that March when he first measured in at 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, then delivered a blazing 4.59 run in the 40-yard dash. Tremble arrived at Notre Dame as a lanky 210-pound, three-star receiving tight end. The Jones Creek, Ga., native added 40 pounds under Irish strength coach Matt Balis. But perhaps a victim of his own versatility, he was primarily used as a run blocker in college because he was better at it than any of his position mates. "That part messed with my confi- dence because they wouldn't throw me the ball," Tremble recalled. "I finally had to get out of my own head and realize that just by doing your job, and doing what you're asked to do, you can really help the team more than just trying to be the best, or worrying about all the stats." When asked about his favorite foot- ball feats, Tremble gloats while sharing the story of how he scored touchdowns on both his first college touch (a 26- yard TD catch) and his first NFL touch (a 7-yard jet sweep). "That's pretty awesome," Tremble said. "I'm proud of that because I don't think many players can make that claim." ✦ Tremble scored his first touchdown of the season and the third of his NFL career on a 29-yard pass from quarter- back PJ Walker in Carolina's 21-3 win over Tampa Bay Oct. 23.
