Snow gathered in 60 of those passes for 1,114 yards and 9 scores. Huarte was voted winner of the Heisman Trophy, edging quarterback Jerry Rhome of Tulsa, with Illinois linebacker Dick Butkus finishing third. Noted the Scholastic: "Huarte's story is perhaps the most remarkable of any Heisman winner's. Never had the winner been so unheralded before the season be- gan, never had a non-monogram holder won the award. John Huarte came from nowhere, from 45 minutes' playing time, to become the winner of the nation's most coveted collegiate laurel. His accomplish- ment symbolized the rags-to-riches rise of the entire Notre Dame team." In 2005, John's feats were recognized with induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. After an eight-year NFL career, Hua- rte returned to Southern California and in 1977, he decided to focus his leader- ship and team-building skills on a new business endeavor. He took a leap and signed a lease on the back of a cardboard box, opening the first Arizona Tile loca- tion in San Diego. Today, with about 1,000 employees — nearly half of whom have been with the company for more than a decade, and many who have been with the company since the beginning — Arizona Tile of- fers unparalleled customer service and products from around the world and has become one of the leading tile and slab distributors in the United States. Family life is important to John and his wife, Eileen, who have been blessed with five children and 14 grandchildren. John is also involved with several phil- anthropic organizations. Currently, he is a member of the Board of Trustees for St. John's Health Foundation in Santa Monica, Calif. On Nov. 25, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, John Huarte will receive the Rockne LIV- ING LEGEND Award at the 2022 Knute Rockne Spirit of Sports Awards Cel- ebration.
