DECEMBER 2022 11 cavalier sports " On the women's side, what can you say? They were 10th last year and third this year. I don't think I could have asked for a better performance from the women. I think they put aside their own individual needs and worked for the team. They did a marvelous job." — Virginia director of track & field and cross country Vin Lananna on the women's cross country team finishing third at the ACC Championships Oct. 28 in Charlottesville 4 Players from Virginia were named to the 2022 All-ACC Field Hockey teams. Graduate student striker Annie McDonough and first-year midfielder Daniela Mendez-Trendler were named to the first team, while fourth-year midfielder Adele Iacobucci and first-year goalkeeper Jet Trim- born were named to the second team. The No. 5-ranked Cavaliers advanced to the title game of the ACC Championship be- fore falling 3-2 to No. 1 North Carolina. UVA earned a bid to the NCAA Championship for the 26th time in program history, and the 14th time in head coach Michele Madison's 17 seasons in charge. The Wahoos were set to take on No. 9 Iowa in a first-round game Nov. 11 in Evanston, Ill. 5 Members of the Virginia women's soccer team earned postseason honors. Third-year midfielder Lia Godfrey was named first-team All-ACC, while graduate student forward Haley Hopkins was named to the second team, and first- year forward/midfielder Maggie Cagle and fifth-year forward Alexa Spaanstra both earned a spot on the third team. Cagle was joined by midfielder Jill Flammia on the league's All-Freshman team. The No. 11 Cavaliers (13-3-3) earned a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Championship — their 29th straight appearance in the event — and were slated to face Fairleigh Dick- inson (8-10-3) in a first-round matchup Nov. 11 in Charlottesville. " I am high on both squads this season. Each has Final Four upside, in my view, and this early season encounter is an excellent chance to prove it. Scott Drew and TONY BENNETT are also Hall of Fame coaches- in-waiting who would otherwise never face each other." — ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi on the Virginia-Baylor matchup Nov. 18 in Las Vegas being among his 12 nonconference men's basketball games to watch 2 ACC men's basketball players in the past 30 years have registered at least 175 assists, 50 steals and 25 blocks in a season: Duke's Grant Hill in 1993-94 and Virginia's Reece Beekman in 2021-22. Beekman, a rising third-year, also joined UNC's Ty Lawson (2008-09), NC State's Chris Corchiani (1988-89) and Sidney Lowe (1980-81 and 1982-83), and Wake Forest's Muggsy Bogues (1984-85) as the only players to lead the ACC in assists (5.2 per game), steals (2.1 per game) and assist-to- turnover ratio (3.62) in the same season.
