12 CAVALIER CORNER
BY JEFF WHITE
F
or the UVA football team, the new
year brings an opportunity to write a
happier chapter in the annals of the
program.
The Cavaliers' 2022 season, Tony Elliott's
first as their head coach, was marked by
tragedy and ended prematurely. Virginia
canceled its final two games after three
players — wide receivers Devin Chandler and
Lavel Davis Jr. and linebacker D'Sean Perry
— were shot and killed on Nov. 13 upon
returning to Grounds from a class field trip
to Washington, D.C. Another player, fifth-year
tailback Mike Hollins, was wounded in the
shooting, as well as a second-year student,
Marlee Morgan.
In the days that followed, the UVA and
Charlottesville communities pulled together
in their grief and vowed that Chandler, Davis
and Perry would not be forgotten.
