FEBRUARY 2023 29 fellow Wahoo Dr. Tom Perrin. "All of the experiences that I had from UVA through now have pre- pared me for my current position," Harshaw said. As he reflects on his experiences and passion for supporting UVA wrestling, he hopes to continue to help drive the program's momen- tum forward. He believes George Edwards, who was later inducted into the Pennsylvania Wresting Coaches Hall of Fame in 2005, built the foundation as the UVA head coach from 1969-93. Then Lenny Bernstein carried the torch when Harshaw was a student- athlete, followed by the current head coach Steve Garland, his for- mer teammate and roommate, and friend through the years. Garland has led the Cavaliers to a pair of ACC cham- pionships (2010 and 2015), and Harshaw thinks he has done a phenomenal job. "I see the program continuing to grow in national stature," Harshaw said. "We've had those top-10 years and, unfortunately, we haven't been able to keep up in re- cent years because other programs have invested what we haven't. We need to invest in wrestling more! "The landscape has changed in the ACC in all sports, especially wrestling. Virginia Tech, NC State, Pittsburgh and UNC have all in- vested in their wrestling programs, and we have some catching up to do." Harshaw continues to be in- spired to support student-athletes through VAF by his sense of responsibility, pride and paying it forward to help other student- athletes have a similar experience. He has given back every year since graduating and his goal is to pay back his entire scholarship and one day endow a scholarship for wrestling. Harshaw said he is moved by how much VAF donations transform lives. — Jess Armistead Contact the Virginia Athletics Foundation to learn about the benefits of these gifts: Bequests and Beneficiary Designations | Life Income Gifts | Qualified Charitable Distributions | Gifts of Non-Cash Assets, including Stock and Real Estate PLANNED GIFTS COMBINE YOUR PHILANTHROPIC GOALS WITH SMART FINANCIAL STRATEGIES. virginiaathleticsfoundation.com | 434-982-5555 STABLE INCOME in uncertain times If you are 55 or over, a charitable gift annuity provides a way to support the VAF and receive a fixed annual payment.
