28 SEPT. 9, 2023 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED strike that hit sophomore running back Jadarian Price right in the numbers. It was all Price from there, but Angeli played his part. And for the first time ever in a Notre Dame uniform, he played a significant part in an Irish victory. "I was proud of Steve," Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said. "Made some good decisions. Wasn't perfect, which it's never perfect, but I thought he did a good job of keeping drives going, making big plays on I think some third downs, and obviously put- ting the ball in the end zone." Angeli found junior wide receiver Jayden Thomas for 5 yards on third- and-4 and junior tight end Mitchell Ev- ans for 12 yards on third-and-8. The throw to Evans was an accurate one over the middle of the field. A true chain mover that every quarterback needs to be able to pull out of his pocket mul- tiple times per game. Angeli checked that box. He's got the ability to check a whole lot of boxes. Notre Dame fans aren't go- ing to see that much this fall as long as graduate student starter Sam Hartman stays healthy, but it was good to get a glimpse of who could be the program's starter in 2024. It's early, and the trans- fer portal always looms (just look at Hartman), but right now he's the leader in the clubhouse to earn that title. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES • Graduate student quarterback Sam Hart- man improved his FBS-leading streak of games responsible for at least one touchdown to 36. He scored on a 5-yard run — his first rushing score for the Irish and the 18th of his career — and tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the second quarter before sitting out the entire second half. • Junior running back Audric Estimé rushed 13 times for 116 yards and a touchdown, notching his fourth career 100-yard rushing performance. • Freshman running back Jeremiyah Love posted his first career touchdown run — on his fifth career carry and first at Notre Dame Stadium — rambling 36 yards run to cap Notre Dame's first scoring drive. • Senior cornerback Clarence Lewis' 33-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter was the third pick and first score of his career. • Sophomore tight end Holden Staes hauled in his first career touchdown reception on his second career catch, a 4-yarder right before halftime to cap the Irish's 80-yard drive that took just 38 seconds. • Sophomore punter Bryce McFerson was finally able to attempt his first career punt midway through the third quarter against Ten- nessee State in Game 2, booting it 54 yards for a touchback.
