BLUEGOLDONLINE.COM SEPT. 30, 2023 15 65 Years Ago: Oct. 4, 1958 For the third straight season, head coach Terry Brennan's No. 7-ranked Notre Dame team played in Dallas' Cotton Bowl versus the No. 17 SMU Mustangs, headlined by quarterback "Dandy" Don Meredith. Led by fullback Nick Pietrosante's 94 yards on 18 rushing attempts and sophomore Bill "Red" Mack's 41-yard scoring scamper, the Irish took a 7-6 lead into the fourth quarter before sealing the 14-6 outcome on a 1-yard scoring run by quarterback Bob Williams. It would be Notre Dame's last trip to Texas un- til 11 years later — when it would return to the Cotton Bowl after ending its 45-year bowl ban. 40 Years Ago: Oct. 1, 1983 Picked No. 1 in the preseason by The Sporting News, the 1-2 Fighting Irish had freshman quar- terback Steve Beuerlein make his first career start, in place of senior Blair Kiel, versus the reeling Colorado Buffaloes under second-year head coach Bill McCartney. Beuerlein became the third freshman quar- terback starter in school history, joining Ralph Guglielmi (eligible in 1951 because of the Korean War) and Kiel in 1980. He completed 8 of 12 passes for 133 yards in the 27-3 victory on the road while the Irish rushed for 354 yards, led by tailback Allen Pinkett's 132 and fullback Chris Smith's 70. McCartney's staff included seven assistants who would become major college head coaches, including Gary Barnett, former Notre Dame All- American Gerry DiNardo and one-time LSU boss Les Miles. 35 Years Ago: Oct. 1, 1988 Much maligned for his passing woes after be- ginning the year 5 of 23 in the first nine quarters of the season, junior quarterback Tony Rice tied a Notre Dame record by completing 10 straight passes during a 42-14 romp at home in a night game versus Stanford. The streak stretched over two games — the last four versus Purdue the week prior and the first six versus the Cardinal. He finished 11-of- 14 passing for 129 yards with a touchdown to freshman tight end Derek Brown, and added 107 rushing yards on 14 carries, opening the scoring with a 30-yard run off the option and closing it with a 6-yard tally. He became only the third Irish quarterback ever to eclipse 100 passing yards and 100 rush- ing yards in the same game. The first was 1956 Heisman Trophy winner Paul Hornung in a loss that year to SMU when he completed 5 of 9 passes for 113 yards and added 101 yards on 11 carries. The second was 1970 Heisman runner-up Joe Theismann during a 29-0 win at Michigan State that year when he was 12-of-17 passing for 147 yards and carried 13 times for 107 yards. Rice credited his newfound accuracy to prac- ticing dart throwing with touch. "He's a winner, he's a leader, and he's the guy they get their meal ticket from," head coach Lou Holtz said afterwards, defending Rice from a bevy of critics. 10 Years Ago: Oct. 5, 2013 In the fifth Shamrock Series outing held by Notre Dame, the unranked Irish held off No. 22 Arizona State 37-34 in the Dallas Cowboys' opulent new AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Quarterback Tommy Rees completed 17 of 38 passes for 279 yards, tossing touchdowns to tight ends Ben Koyack (19 yards) and Troy Niklas (21 yards), plus wideout TJ Jones (8 yards). Kicker Kyle Brindza converted 3 of 4 field goal attempts, highlighted by a school-record-tying 53-yarder. Defensively, linebacker Prince Sh- embo recorded 3 sacks, while linebacker Dan Fox's 14-yard interception return for a touch- down gave Notre Dame a 37-27 cushion with 1:08 left in the game. UNDER THE DOME Linebacker Prince Shembo recorded 3 sacks to help Notre Dame knock off Arizona State 37-34 in a 2013 Shamrock Series game in Arlington, Texas.
