NOVEMBER 2023 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 25 just eight off the team-leading total, in between a pair of veteran linebackers in Junior Colson (34 tackles) and Michael Barrett (25). Meanwhile, the Michigan defense cruised along giving up, on average, a meager 6.7 points per game, the best mark in the nation. Hausmann ex- pressed considerable gratitude — but not surprise — at finding himself in the middle of all this. "It's really cool, really special," Haus- mann said. "But we're not surprised in the slightest. We know we're capable of playing at that level. We just have to make sure we keep striving for that and improve this defense. We have an end goal we want to get to, and we have to keep getting better each day and each week." Hausmann has his eyes wide open, heading into the tougher part of Michi- gan's schedule. He remains wide-eyed about other aspects of Michigan foot- ball he's witnessing, such as the tradi- tion of support by the football alums and the fans of the Wolverines. "What struck me the most was the alumni," Hausmann said. "The alumni section of the stadium is very close to the field level. I think it's overlooked. To be able to know that presence is right there, so close, almost with you on the field, and to know that generations past have played here, and legacies have been made here, and they're right there watching you. It's just a really special moment playing on that field." And yes, the first time he made his way out of the Michigan locker room, ventured down the tunnel and ap- peared in the sunshine before more than 100,000 wildly receptive followers defi- nitely left an impression. "I was really blessed," Hausmann recalled. "Not many people have the opportunity to play against that team, then play for that team. I'm truly blessed and humbled. It was a surreal moment, running out of that tunnel for the first time, wearing maize and blue." Bigger moments await. Hausmann understands it, embraces it, relishes it. Like always, he's ready for more. Why get through it, when we get to do it? "I truly think this team has goals and perspectives that we haven't even thought about," he said. "Obviously, we have high aspirations of where we want to go this year, but I believe there are things we haven't even talked about that we have the ability of reaching. It's just a part of our humility and respect for the game of football. "We know, at any second, that can be taken away from us. That's how we go about our business. We don't know when that last day is going to be for us. We just make sure we maximize each day." ❏ ❱ Hausmann "Obviously, I had a lot of respect for Michigan. I thought really highly of them. A lot of research had been done. I knew I could trust what was being told to me, and there wasn't much selling that needed to be done." 1969 MICHIGAN vs OHIO STATE GAME Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, Michigan ON DVD!!
