[ 2023-24 BASKETBALL PREVIEW ] NOVEMBER 2023 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 47 much last year. We needed her to defend the other team's best player. "She really embraced that role, and it was so fun to watch her this summer on that team where she didn't have that scoring role. She became a distributor, and she locked down some of the best women players in international basket- ball. "I think that really gave her a ton of confidence." By locking in on the defensive side of the floor, Phelia will go a long way in continuing to establish herself as a tone-setter for the program. "With Team USA, my role was de- fense," Phelia said. "Taking pride in my defense was an eye-opening experience. … Coming back to Michigan, I feel like tak- ing on that leadership role, because we did lose a lot of experience. I am able to be that voice and bring in our transfers along with the freshmen." Iowa, Indiana, Ohio State and Maryland are expected to make up the top tier of the conference, but there's some fluidity in the projected Big Ten standings from there. The media picked Michigan to finish fifth in the preseason awards put out by the Big Ten, with Phelia making the All-Big Ten squads picked by both the coaches and media. From there, it will be about devel- oping chemistry with new players and developing the next wave of stars in Ann Arbor. "I think one of our greatest responsi- bilities as coaches, and this is something that we talk about all the time in recruit- ing, is to develop you to your full poten- tial. That's as a young woman, and that's as a basketball player," Barnes Arico said. "We owe that to your family and the recruiting process to do those things. "We want to help make you the best basketball player that we can. If that means you're going to play in the WNBA, that's awesome. If that means that you went to the greatest university in the world and can now go to medical school, that's awesome. "I think part of our responsibility is to provide that platform."
