18 THE WOLVERINE ❱ MARCH 2024 BY CHRIS BALAS I t didn't take long for Michigan athletics director Warde Manuel to decide which direction he'd take the program after Jim Har- baugh signed with the NFL's Los Ange- les Chargers. Two days later — Jan. 26, 2024 — Manuel swiftly named Moore the Wolverines' 21st football coach. At 37 (he turned 38 on Feb. 3), Moore be- came the youngest U-M head man since Bump Elliott, who was 34 in 1959, and also the first full-time African Ameri- can head coach in school history. (Mike Hart holds the distinction as the first, having served as the interim head coach for the second half of the UNLV game last season.) It was a position for which he'd been groomed, even if he didn't know it when he first joined the staff as tight ends coach in 2018. The following morning, Jan. 27, Moore met the media for his first press conference in his new role. "I want to thank Coach Harbaugh for the faith that he's had and displayed to me over the past six years, and for sup- porting my growth as a football coach during that time," Moore said. "He put me in great position here to lead the program, gave me an opportunity last season to serve as the interim head coach during some of the biggest games of the year.
