2024 FOOTBALL RECRUITING ISSUE ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ ❱ 58 THE WOLVERINE ❱ MARCH 2024 BY EJ HOLLAND Michigan picked up a commitment from three-star Charlotte (N.C.) Provi- dence Day wide receiver Channing Goodwin back in early May, marking a foundation-building win on the trail. A legacy recruit, Goodwin is the son of former Wolverine offen- sive lineman and NFL vet- e ra n Jo n a t h a n G o o dw i n . However, Channing wanted to make his own decision and took his time with the process. The younger Goodwin re- mained locked in with U-M throughout the process and is still happy with his pick as he gets ready to enroll in June. "Just the relationships I've built have me excited about my commitment," Goodwin said. "I really feel like it's the place I need to be. I love everything about Michigan. I can't wait to get up there. Coach [Ron] Bellamy has been helping me and giving me a few pointers. That rela- tionship is great." Goodwin is now looking ahead to donning the winged helmet at Michigan along with his prep teammate, four-star quarterback Jadyn Davis. "I'm really excited about it," Good- win said. "It will be great to continue playing with him in college. He's a great quarterback, and we already have that chemistry. … I've been tight with Jadyn since middle school and then through high school and now college. I'm look- ing forward to that." Goodwin projects as a slot receiver at the next level and has already been studying the offense with Bellamy. "After I committed, we were able to talk more about ball," Goodwin said. "We talked scheme and how I can fit into the offense.. We ran through some of their plays. He said I could be similar to somebody like Cornelius Johnson. "He said he's going to coach you hard and still love on you. He showed me how the run game can help the pass game." Goodwin already carries a famous last name around Ann Arbor, but he's not going to be satisfied living in his father's shadow. As Providence Day head coach Chad Grier put it, Goodwin, the No. 85 wide receiver and No. 539 overall prospect nationally, is going to work hard on and off the field to earn everything during his time at Michigan. And he's very much willing to do whatever it takes. "Channing is a model guy," Grier said. "He's the guy you want. He's incredibly dependable. He's going to play hurt. He's tough, strong, fast and smart. There are no chinks in the armor with Channing. We asked him to play safety for us, and he ended up being a starter and playing both ways the whole game." ❑ Receiver Channing Goodwin Was Born To Be A Michigan Man Goodwin, who caught 65 passes for 1,094 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior, was on the receiving end of U-M quarterback commit Jadyn Davis' passes at Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day for the past four seasons. PHOTO BY EJ HOLLAND 2024 Projection Goodwin is one of the most consistent pass catchers na onally but lacks the speed and explosiveness to be an immediate impact player at Michigan. He will likely need a redshirt year to develop in the U-M strength and condi oning program. Goodwin projects as a pure slot receiver who will spend me learning from junior Tyler Morris. THEY SAID IT On3 director of scou ng and rankings Charles Power: "I think Channing Goodwin is a reliable possession receiver. He has a rapport with Jadyn Davis, having played a ton of football with him at the high school level. He has strong hands. He's tough. He's effec ve working short and interme- diate areas of the field. Ideally, he's best suited for playing in the slot, but he can maybe play on the outside as well."
