C O M Katie DeSa — Women's Ice Hockey Last season's Goaltender of the Year in the Atlantic Hockey America conference, DeSa is picking up right where she left off. The senior from Pawcatuck, Conn., was leading the league through Penn State's first six games with a 1.20 goals-against average. She was named the AHA Goaltender of the Week for the 10th time in her career after a strong showing in Penn State's season-opening victories over No. 9 St. Lawrence. DeSa had 14 saves in a 3-0 win on Sept. 25 and followed with 23 saves in a 5-2 victory the next night. Thanks largely to DeSa, Penn State was allowing a league-low 1.55 goals per game. Jonathan Evans — Men's Soccer Evans was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after allowing just 1 goal in wins over Robert Morris and Michigan State. The redshirt freshman from Collegeville, Pa., totaled 2 saves in a 2-0 shutout of the Colonials on Sept. 30 at Jeffrey Field, and he followed with 6 saves in a 2-1 victory over the Spartans on Oct. 3 in East Lansing. Evans started nine of Penn State's first 12 games, compiling a 1.22 goals-against average and .718 save percentage. He ranked sixth in the Big Ten in the former category among goalies with more than five starts and fifth in the latter. Kennedy Martin — Women's Volleyball Penn State has had an up-and-down season, but Martin, a Florida transfer, has been an of- fensive force. Through the Nittany Lions' first 14 matches, the junior right-side hitter from Fort Mill, S.C., was leading the Big Ten with 304 kills and an average of 5.24 kills per set. She won Big Ten Player of the Week honors for the second time this season after totaling 63 kills in matches against USC and UCLA in late September. That total included a career-high 34 kills versus the Bruins. In Penn State's sweep of No. 7 Wisconsin on Oct. 10, Martin had 23 kills, 8 digs and 3 blocks. JJ Wiebusch — Men's Ice Hockey While considerable attention has been paid to the recent and future NHL draftees who've been added to Penn State's roster this year, the team's leading goal-scorer in its first four games was a returnee. Wiebusch, a sophomore forward from Verona, Wis., was leading the Big Ten with 6 goals through the season's first two weekends. Four of those goals came in the Nittany Lions' home opener against Clarkson. While his offensive outburst wasn't enough to stave off a 6-4 loss to the Golden Knights, he did make some program history, becoming the first Penn State player to score 4 goals in a single game. — Matt Herb PENN STATE'S TOP PERFORMERS Help BWI Grow!
