12 THE WOLVERINE ❱ NOVEMBER 2025 ❱ INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS MICHIGAN TO RAISE TREY BURKE'S NUMBER IN CRISLER CENTER JAN. 23 For the first time in 20 years, the men's basketball team will honor a program legend by raising his number into the rafters. This time, it will be the No. 3 of legendary point guard Trey Burke. Michigan announced on Oct. 3 that Burke's number would be hon- ored at Crisler Center on Friday, Jan. 23, against the Ohio State Buckeyes. The rivalry tilt is an appropriate stage, given that Burke is a Columbus, Ohio, native. Five jerseys hang in the Crisler Cen- ter rafters. Only one of them — Cazzie Russell's No. 33 — is officially retired by the program. The others include Bill Buntin (No. 22), Phil Hubbard (No. 35), Glen Rice (No. 41) and Rudy Tomja- novich (No. 45). This season, junior point guard El- liot Cadeau will don the No. 3 uniform for the Wolverines. Burke's number being honored has been in the works for some time, with the announcement back in the spring that he had heard Michigan would eventually be commemorating it. "I was told not to say anything, but yes. I'm sure they aren't going to be upset when they see … I'm glad you asked it, because I wasn't going to say anything," Burke said on the "Politely RAW" podcast when asked if he's had communication with Michigan about his jersey being honored. "I have heard that it will happen. It will hap- pen. Bucket list for me. … I appreciate them, appreciate everything they did for me and my family as well." Burke was the consensus national player of the year in 2013, winning the Wooden, Naismith AP and Oscar Robertson awards. He was a consensus first-team All-American and named the Big Ten Player of the Year. Burke appeared in 73 games with 72 starts over his two-year career at Michigan, averaging 16.9 points and 5.7 assists per outing. He declared for the 2013 NBA Draft and was picked No. 9 overall by Minnesota, which traded his rights to the Utah Jazz where he played the first three of his nine NBA seasons. Burke last played in the NBA in 2022 and currently plays for the Guangdong Southern Tigers in China. — Anthony Broome ZACH BRYAN CONCERT SETS ATTENDANCE RECORD Michigan Stadium's first-ever con- cert, by all accounts, was a rousing success. The Zach Bryan concert on Sept. 27, which also featured John Mayer, Ryan Bingham and the Texas Gentlemen and Joshua Slone, brought in an audi- ence of 112,408 people, making for the largest ticketed concert in U.S. his- tory. The previous record was held by George Strait on June 15, 2024, when he played a show at Texas A&M's Kyle Field. A statement from AEG and Bryan also said that a merchandise sales re- cord was hit at the event, with at least $5 million made from the show. Tickets for the event went on sale in February and sold out in less than 2.5 hours. The concert went for seven hours and wrapped just before midnight with a 90-second fireworks display, approved as a one-time exception by the U-M Board of Regents. According to The Michigan Daily, officials reported two arrests for dis- orderly conduct, 18 ejections and 121 medical responses, which they said fell in line with a normal football Saturday in Ann Arbor. Melissa Overton, deputy chief of police for DPSS, told The Daily that the concert was a success from a pub- lic safety perspective, and some of the lessons learned will be applied in the event of future concerts and non-foot- ball dates. "From a public safety standpoint, the concert was successful," Overton said in an email. "Our plan worked as intended, with strong interagency coordination and effective commu- nication among all partners. As with every event, we review lessons learned to refine future operations, but no sig- nificant issues arose." — Anthony Broome MAIZE AND BLUE NOTEBOOK Trey Burke, the 2013 consensus national player of the year, will have his No. 3 Michigan jersey raised to the rafters when the Wolverines host his hometown Ohio State Buckeyes on Jan. 23, 2026.
