MAY 2026 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 67 ❱ OLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE BASEBALL A complete game from senior David Lally Jr. helped the Wolverines earn a 2-1 win over Northwestern on April 19, finishing off a series sweep and improving the team's record to 24-15 (10-8 Big Ten). The Grand Blanc, Mich., native tossed his first-career 9-inning complete game, allowing 1 run on 1 hit while striking out 6 Wildcats in the effort. Junior Colby Turner went 2-for-4 with a run and extended his hit- ting streak to 19 games and run-scoring streak to 16 games. SOFTBALL Junior outfielder Jenissa Conway's 3-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning powered the Wolverines to a 10-8 walk-off win over Ohio State in Ann Arbor in a series- opening victory on April 10. U-M posted 15 total hits with 6 multi-hit performances in the rivalry tilt, led by Maddie Erickson, who went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI thanks to a home run and a double. Through 45 games, the Wolverines were 28- 17 with a Big Ten mark of 7-11. MEN'S GOLF U-M used a final-round 300 to post a 903 54- hole total and finish 10th to close out the regu- lar season at the Hoosier Collegiate Invitational on April 19. The Wolverines were led by fresh- man Jordan Hwang, who earned a career-best tie for sixth with a 217 — a program best this spring. The Wolverines had two other top-60 finishes with sophomores RJ Arone (T-52nd, 229) and Dean Muratore (T-55, 230). WOMEN'S GOLF The Wolverines recorded a final-round 302 and 892 total over 54 holes to earn a sixth- place finish at the Terps Invitational at Mary- land to close out the regular season. Senior Mara Janess led the Wolverines with a 222, tying for 18th and grabbing her first top-20 finish since October's Illini Women's Invita- tional. Senior Sydney Sung returned to the starting lineup and tied for 29th in the event with a 223. WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS Tenth-ranked U-M closed out its best season since 2023 in the NCAA Regional Final, scoring a 196.750 to place fourth in the event. Sopho- more Jahzara Ranger led the Wolverines on the floor exercise with a 9.900 score. Graduate student Carly Bauman and soph- omore Sophia Diaz represented the program at the NCAA Individual Event Finals on April 16, where Bauman closed out her career with a 9.8375 on the balance beam. Diaz scored a 9.8625 on the uneven bars in the third rotation. MEN'S LACROSSE Michigan lost to rival Ohio State on a last-sec- ond goal on April 17 in the regular-season fi- nale, dropping its record to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in the Big Ten. Freshman Adam Udell scored a career-best 5 goals and added an assist in a 6-point day, while Luke Shannehan had 2 goals in the defeat. WOMEN'S LACROSSE No. 11 U-M (11-4, 5-2 Big Ten) took down No. 3 Maryland in a 15-4 victory in Ann Arbor on April 16, earning its first-ever win against the Terrapins. It also marked the first time in program history that the team defeated an opponent ranked in the nation's top three. The Wolverines outscored the Terps 5-1 in both the second and third quarters, pushing the game to a running clock with 12:36 to go in the historic win. MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING The 10th-ranked Wolverines ended their season with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships in late March. It is the highest finish for the Maize and Blue since the 2017- 18 season, when they also finished eighth, and the best placement under head coach Matt Bowe. WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING U-M ended its season with a sixth-place fin- ish at the NCAA Championships, with Virginia taking home the national title. Upon the season's completion, junior Bella Sims won Big Ten Swimmer of the Year honors, while Bowe was named Swimming Coach of the Year on April 2. Sims captured the pro- gram's first individual national title in the 400- yard individual medley, won two Big Ten titles to help push the team to its first conference crown since 2018 and was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships. ROWING No. 17 Michigan faced a strong NCAA Cham- pionships preview field at the Big Ten Invi- tational (April 19) on Lake Natoma in Sacra- mento, Calif., including No. 1 Stanford, No. 5 Washington and No. 9 California. U-M grabbed a fourth-place photo finish in the first varsity eight. MEN'S TENNIS U-M sent its seniors out victorious with a 4-1 win over Indiana on April 19 in the final home match of the season at Varsity Tennis Center, closing the regular season with a six-game win streak to improve its record to 13-9 (8-5 Big Ten). WOMEN'S TENNIS The 17th-ranked Wolverines claimed their fourth straight, and 14th overall, Big Ten cham- pionship with a 4-1 win over rival Michigan State on April 18 in East Lansing. The confer- ence crown puts them alone in second place in Big Ten women's tennis history, and head coach Ronni Bernstein is tied for first among conference coaches with her 13th title in 19 years in Ann Arbor. TRACK AND FIELD Both the men's and women's programs per- formed at the Big Red Classic at Nebraska on April 17-18. The 13th-ranked men's output was headlined by a sixth-place finish by Zane Forist in the discus throw (54.26 meters). The women saw junior Elizabeth Tapper finish fourth in the shot put (16.52 meters), while sophomore Abigail Russell grabbed fifth place in the same event (16.39 meters). Russell also placed second in the discus throw with a 52.94-meter effort. Senior Gabriella Newman finished fifth in the high jump after clearing 1.65 meters. WRESTLING The Wolverines finished seventh at the 2026 NCAA Championships with 66 team points, capping the tournament with a strong finish in Cleveland. U-M had five All-Americans who earned medal-round wins, including Lach- lan McNeil (149 pounds) and Taye Ghadiali (heavyweight), closing out their careers with third-place finishes. U-M went 7-1 in the Sat- urday morning consolation session, with three bonus wins and 18 team points scored. This was Michigan's ninth top-10 finish in its last 10 NCAA Championships. Michigan women's tennis captured its fourth straight, and 14th overall, Big Ten championship with a 4-1 win over rival Michigan State on April 18 in East Lansing.
