ND Sports Uncharted Territory Notre Dame's veteran-heavy lineup has seen and done a lot of what college hockey has to offer, but they'll be learning on the fly again this year as the only team that is heading east to find a new home after the dissolution of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Irish officially joined the Hockey East Association this summer, significantly stretching the league's footprint toward the West. Prior to Notre Dame's inclusion, the University of Vermont's Burlington campus was as far as conference games got from the Atlantic Ocean. Six of the conference's 11 teams are from Massachusetts. Notre Dame has played a handful of their new league mates in recent years — Boston College, Boston University, Maine and Northeastern to name some — but the move will still take some getting used to. "There's going to be an adjustment period for us," Jackson said. "We will be seeing different styles of play, but I think the biggest factors are going to be when we play on the road in new venues and the officiating." Hockey East typically features a more high-scoring, up-tempo style of play, and while the NCAA wants its referees to be uniform across conferences, the calls often reflect the desire to keep scoring options open. Jackson, who often butted heads with the CCHA officials office, said he's looking forward to working with the new group this year.
