Under the Dome Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Nov. 12-18 75 Years Ago: Nov. 12, 1938 No. 2-ranked Notre Dame's impressive 19-0 shutout of No. 12 Minnesota elevates head coach Elmer Layden's Fighting Irish to No. 1 for the first time since the advent of the Associated Press poll in 1936. It also is the 300th victory in the program's history. Halfback Lou Zontini's first-quarter 84-yard scoring run — to this day the third-longest jaunt in Notre Dame Stadium — opens the scoring, and Bob Saggau later tosses scoring passes of 42 yards to Earl Brown and 14 yards to John Kelly. With a 7-0 record and games remaining against Northwestern and USC, the Irish control their own destiny in the race toward the national title. 35 Years Ago: Nov. 18, 1978 Two weeks after setting a single-game Notre Dame rushing record with 219 yards in a victory against Navy, junior running back Vagas Ferguson rewrites the standard again with a 255-yard rushing effort during a 38-21 win at No. 20 Georgia Tech. With both teams entering the contest on seven-game winning streaks, Ferguson sets the tone on the second play with a 68-yard run to set up Notre Dame's first score and later gallops for a 20-yard score to provide a 17-0 cushion. By halftime, Ferguson has 188 yards rushing. Meanwhile, Joe Montana (14-of-19 passing for 190 yards with two touchdowns) completes his last 10 passes to tie the school record set by Heisman Trophy winner Angelo Bertelli in 1943. On Notre Dame's final touchdown, which extends the lead to 38-15, Georgia Tech fans begin pelting
