What Would You Fight For?
Thanks to Andrew Owens for writing your article in Blue and Gold Illustrated entitled "Lose The Leprechaun"
(Oct. 28, 2013).
I am a 56-year-old Irish-American
who has been rooting for the Notre
Dame Fighting Irish football team since
I was a very young boy. I have had two
of my children attend Notre Dame, and
both played intercollegiate athletics.
I could not be more proud that the
University of Notre Dame uses the
nickname of "Irish" and also of "Fighting Irish." I am also very proud of
their leprechaun logo and the Leprechaun who attends sporting events.
You would not believe how excited the
parents, fans and players were in the
spring of 2001 when the leprechaun attended my son's NCAA championship
semifinal lacrosse game.
Most of my Irish-American friends
are tough-natured and thick-skinned
people. They are not the sensitive type.
I was pretty certain that in my lifetime
I would never see the day when some
politically correct sissy would call for
the removal of the "Fighting Irish"
nickname and the Leprechaun mascot.
If Notre Dame installs FieldTurf or
a Jumbotron, I could live with that. If
they get rid of the "Fighting Irish" nickname and Leprechaun mascot, I would
never buy another piece of Notre Dame
apparel.
Most fans are in agreement that keeping the
"Fighting Irish" nickname and leprechaun logo is a
positive for Notre Dame.

I disagree strongly with the written
opinion of Irish Central columnist Nialls
O'Dowd. He speaks for himself. Notre
Dame has the best nickname and mascot in the NCAA. I will be very disappointed with the administration of the
University if they respond to that columnist or even acknowledge his article.
Go Fighting Irish!
