Theodore Hesburgh's letter to the student body after the painful season ending loss to USC in 1964. Wrote Hesburgh: "One of the greatest signs of immaturity is not to be capable of living with success, without being arrogant, boorish, or just plain unbearable. Those who win success the hard way, like the team, rarely show those unpleasant qualities — only those who ride the coattails of success the easy way do. … Life goes on, the challenge remains and it will be a really dark and cold place here if we ever lose the desire to be No. 1 in everything we do, or lack grace and style and humanity in doing it." Your Slip Is Showing It is really embarrassing to see the Notre Dame Stadium field before and during the game, most recently Navy. Here we are on a nationally televised game, and the field looks worse than any in high school. I started to notice not only the ball carriers slippage but also the linemen. It really became evident when Tommy Reese threw the interception when the would-be receiver, TJ Jones, slipped and fell. I'm a traditionalist by nature, but the natural grass needs to go and FieldTurf needs to be installed. What is the use of trying to recruit speed when they have no traction?
