ter" column (page 62). Taking the safer
route is the antithesis of "Fighting Irish."
Maybe an even better way to summarize
it is an excerpt in Notre Dame president
Rev. Theodore Hesburgh's letter to the student body after the painful season ending
loss to USC in 1964.
Wrote Hesburgh: "One of the greatest
signs of immaturity is not to be capable
of living with success, without being arrogant, boorish, or just plain unbearable.
Those who win success the hard way, like
the team, rarely show those unpleasant
qualities — only those who ride the coattails of success the easy way do. … Life goes
on, the challenge remains and it will be a
really dark and cold place here if we ever
lose the desire to be No. 1 in everything we
do, or lack grace and style and humanity in
doing it."
Your Slip Is Showing
It is really embarrassing to see the
Notre Dame Stadium field before and
during the game, most recently Navy.
Here we are on a nationally televised
game, and the field looks worse than
any in high school.
I started to notice not only the ball
carriers slippage but also the linemen.
It really became evident when Tommy
Reese threw the interception when the
would-be receiver, TJ Jones, slipped
and fell.
I'm a traditionalist by nature, but the
natural grass needs to go and FieldTurf
needs to be installed. What is the use of
trying to recruit speed when they have
no traction?
