Under the Dome Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Nov. 25-Dec. 3 70 Years Ago: Nov. 28, 1943 In the season finale, head coach Frank Leahy's 9-0 and No. 1-ranked Fighting Irish lose 19-14 to Great Lakes Naval on a 46-yard pass from Steve Lach to Paul Anderson with 33 seconds left. Great Lakes is one of numerous World War II semi-pro teams composed of former and future college stars (such as Notre Dame's Emil "Six Yard" Sitko) because many college teams — including most of the SEC — suspend football action, leaving 76 teams at the major college level. Despite the loss, Notre Dame finishes with 86 of the possible 131 first-place votes to win the national title. That's because the Fighting Irish defeated the teams that finished No. 2 (Iowa Pre-Flight, 14-13), No. 3 (Michigan, 35-12) and No. 4 (Navy, 33-6), as well as No. 9 (Northwestern, 25-6), No. 11 (Army, 26-0) and No. 13 (Georgia Tech, 55-13). 40 Years Ago: Dec. 1, 1973 For the first time in 24 years, Notre Dame finishes a regular season unbeaten and untied (10-0), after a 44-0 victory at Miami. Head coach Ara Parseghian had been 9-0 with the Irish in both 1964 and 1970, but lost the finale at USC both times. Notre Dame outgains the Hurricanes in total yardage 574-168, with 448 coming on the ground. The starting backfield sees fullback Wayne "The Train" Bullock carry 20 times for 116 yards and two scores,
