From 1925-68, it opted not to go to bowl games because of travel expenses, academic calendar and the fact that bowls had no bearing on the national title. The 1953 Irish finished No. 2 while Maryland was No. 1. Even though, the Terps lost to Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, the Irish remained No. 2 because the national title was declared at the end of the regular season. Notre Dame's 1966 team is the last in college football to win a consensus national championship without playing in a bowl. In 1968, the Associated Press began voting on the national champion after bowl game results, and the following year Notre Dame entered the postseason fray. The Cotton Bowl has been Notre Dame's popular and successful destination with seven appearances and a 5-2 record. The only other bowls where Notre Dame has recorded two wins are the Sugar (2-2) and Orange (2-3). These have been the states where Notre Dame has made the most appearances: State Record Most Recent Season 1. Florida 3-7 2012 (BCS Title Game) 2. Texas 6-2 2010 (Sun) 3t. Louisiana 2-3 2006 (Sugar) 3t. Arizona 1-4 2005 (Fiesta) 5. Hawaii 1-1 2008 (Hawaii) The other two appearances were in California (1925 Rose Bowl), Tennessee (1983 Liberty Bowl) and now New York.
