Game Preview: Rutgers Nov. 2: Rutgers 23, Temple 20 A visit from the winless Owls got Rutgers back into the win column, but the victory didn't come easy. Nova completed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Leonte Carroo on fourth-and-10 with less than a minute remaining in the game to avoid the embarrassing upset. The running game stalled again for the Scarlet Knights, who picked up only 69 yards on the ground. Nov. 9: Cincinnati 52, Rutgers 17 Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Kay exposed a suspect secondary again with 408 yards and four touchdowns in a blowout for the Bearcats. Rutgers fell behind 38-7 at halftime before Cincinnati took its foot off the gas. James carried the ball 19 times for 78 yards in the losing effort. Nov. 21: Central Florida 41, Rutgers 17 Another game against an AAC heavy hitter brought another lopsided loss for a floundering Rutgers team. A blocked punt for a touchdown kept Rutgers within 14 points at halftime, but that was as close as it would get. Nova threw for 107 yards and an interception while losing his grip on the starting job. Nov. 30: Connecticut 28, Rutgers 17 Senior signal-caller Chas Dodd threw for 286 yards in his first start for Rutgers, but also threw two interceptions that played a big role in 2-9 UConn's first win at home in more than a year. The Huskies scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to come from behind and send Rutgers below the .500 mark for the first time since the opening week of the season. Dec. 7: Rutgers 31, USF 6 The Scarlet Knights showed a flash of their September selves in a regular-season finale that salvaged a bowl appearance. James ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns against a physically overmatched USF team. Rutgers jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and then kept the Bulls to a total of 10 rushing yards to coast to a sixth win. — Dan Murphy ✦ Team Statistics Score By Quarters Notre Dame Rutgers 1st 2nd 3rd 4th OT Total Avg. 79818382—325 27.1 9465667826 329 27.4 Turnover Margin Gained Lost +/Notre Dame 13 16 -3 Rutgers 1726-9
