Third-year midfielder Morgan Brian — who was named the National Player of the Year by Soccer America and TopDrawerSoccer.com, and awarded the Hermann Trophy — led the women's team to a 24-1-1 record and the program's second-ever trip to the College Cup. "The best thing in the [television highlights] was watching two of my teammates with the American flag in the stands," said Brian, a thirdyear midfielder who was named the National Player of the Year by both Soccer America and TopDrawerSoccer.com. "I thought that was great." Brian, who also was awarded the Hermann Trophy (nation's top player), led Virginia to one of its most exciting wins of the season at Klöckner in October when she scored a golden goal in the 101st minute, propelling the Cavaliers to a 3-2 double-overtime victory over then-No. 5 Notre Dame in front of a crowd of 2,838 fans. Later in the month, UVa won 2-0 at thenNo. 5 North Carolina. With the victory, Virginia clinched a home game in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament and became the first team to ever win at UNC in three consecutive seasons and to win at all four Tobacco Road schools in the same season. In its next game, UVa set a school record with its 17th straight win, downing Miami 4-0. Another season highlight came in the ACC Tournament when Virginia gave Maryland a rude farewell from the ACC with a 6-1 triumph. In the contest, the Terrapins scored the first goal of the game before UVa roared back with six straight. Virginia won 20 straight games before losing to Virginia Tech in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament. However, the Cavaliers got right back on the horse, defeating Saint Francis, Georgetown, Wake Forest and Michigan en route to the program's second-ever College Cup — the first in the Swanson era. Swanson's squad came oh so close to having the chance to play for a national championship. In the semifinals, the Cavaliers were leading UCLA until a late Bruins goal. The game subsequently went to overtime and was decided on penalty kicks. 1/16/14 12:15 PM
