cavalier profile TOMMY DEVITA Fourth-Year • Track & Field During his senior campaign at Ridgewood High School in New Jersey, Tommy DeVita racked up the honors in track and field with his main event being the high jump. While the accolades were rolling in, DeVita was on the radar of colleges nationwide but knew the University of Virginia was the place for him. After three strong seasons of personal records and great team success as a Cavalier, DeVita was also named a team captain for the 2014 indoor and outdoor track season. "I feel really good," DeVita said heading into his final season. "I just want to stay healthy, stay on the right track, and I feel a lot better this season and ready to compete." During the 2012 indoor season, DeVita placed seventh in the high jump at the ACC Championships — which was a personal best after placing 10th the previous year. The 2012 outdoor season yielded a high jump victory for DeVita at the Liberty Collegiate Invite, where he set a personal record with a jump of 6-8.75. He topped that jump during the 2013 outdoor season with a personal record of 6-9.5 at the Virginia Invitational. "It was the first time I really had a breakthrough in the high jump," DeVita said. "It's really exciting with the whole team behind me cheering, and I'm just hoping to continue that success moving forward." That momentum, along with being named a team captain, has set DeVita up for what looks to be a strong fourth-year season where great things are expected. "My goal is to hit the seven-feet mark in the high jump," DeVita said. "It's been a goal of mine since high school and I would love to jump that this spring. "If I did that, my next goal would be a school record, but for right now that is my short-term goal." — Brandon Lloyd ◆ Photo by Matt Riley/courtesy UVa i28.CP-Tommy DeVita.indd 53 1/16/14 11:02 AM
