VAF STAFFING UPDATES The Virginia Athletics Foundation welcomed three new staff members in November 2013, Amie Carvalho, Rob Schmalz and Brennan Schmidt. In her role as office administrator, Amie Carvalho is responsible for providing donor customer service and has administrative responsibilities that include database management and reporting, support for directors and gift processing. Originally from Massachusetts, Carvalho moved to Charlottesville in early 2013. She graduated from Roger Williams University in 2008 with a B.S. in Criminal Justice. Prior to joining the VAF staff, Carvalho worked as a job coach in Virginia for a supported employment program, and as a case manager for a Youth Center in Rhode Island. For over three years she has proudly volunteered as a mentor to youth with the Big Friends Little Friends mentoring program. Rob Schmalz was named an associate director for the FounAmie Carvalho Rob Schmalz Brennan Schmidt dation. He brings 22 years of sales success, primarily in the financial services industry. Most recently he served as managing director for MKC Entertainment and was responsible for prospect qualification, fundraising and project management. Rob is a 1990 UVa graduate and 4-year letter winner in men's lacrosse. He will work with assigned donors in Virginia, primarily in Richmond and Charlottesville; and initially in the states of North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. In addition, he will work closely with the men's and women's golf programs as his sport assignments. Brennan Schmidt is an annual giving assistant. His focus is on the membership and benefits program for donors at the Contributor, Sabre, Wahoo, Cavalier and Coaches Club giving levels. He also assists with parking and seating allocations for football and basketball. A native of McLean, Va., Schmidt is a two-time graduate of the University, '05 and '12, where he earned a BA in Sociology and a Masters of Education. As an undergraduate Schmidt was a four-year starter and two-time captain (2004, '05) for Cavalier football. He was the first player in school history to start 50 games, finishing with 51 career starts. After finishing at UVa, Schmidt played professional football for the New York Jets and the Rhine Fire of NFL Europe. Following his playing career, Schmidt became the head coach, and only coach, for the Briganti football team of Naples, Italy where he led the 2007 squad to an undefeated season and champions of Argento Bowl XII. In 2009, he returned to UVa to join Mike London's coaching staff where he served two years as a graduate assistant coach. Brennan is married to Sarah Elizabeth Schmidt who is a twice graduate of UVa ('09 and '12) and works as an event planner for the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. i4-6.VAF.indd 8 1/17/14 10:04 AM
