getting to know FOURTH-YEAR JAVELIN THROWER ABBEY KARIN Like the saying goes, the apple doesn't fall far from the athletic tree. That's the case with Virginia javelin thrower Abbey Karin. Karin's mother, Mar y Ellen, ran track at the Universit y of New Hampshire. Her father, M ichael, played hockey at Bates College. Abbey, a captain for the women's track and field team, transferred to Virginia from LSU in the summer of 2011. During the 2012 outdoor season, she captured the javelin event at the Liber ty College Invitational, threw a season-best 45.50 me - ters at the Virginia Challenge and placed fourth in that event at the ACC Championships. In April 2013, she won the javelin at the Virginia Invitational with a throw of 47.32 meters, which at the time was the fourth best in UVa women's history, and placed second in the event at the ACC Championships.
