UNDER THE DOME 65 Years Ago: Oct. 1, 1949 Notre Dame extends its unbeaten streak to 30 with a 27-7 victory at Washington, but Irish head coach Frank Leahy is furious afterwards. Washington head coach Howie Odell, whose team lost 46-0 a year earlier at Notre Dame, has game film spliced together of Notre Dame players holding opposing players without getting whistled for the infraction. Prior to the game, Odell and Huskies athletics director Harvey Cassill secretly hold a meeting with the game's four referees to show the tape. Early in the contest, the Irish are repeatedly whistled for holding and get flagged 11 times overall. Notre Dame ties the score (7-7) two minutes before halftime on a 21-yard scoring pass from quarterback Bob Williams to end Leon Hart. In the second half, Notre Dame outscores the Huskies 20-0, including a tally from Hart at fullback. "How could that be a good game when we had to play four extra men?" Leahy tells reporters after learning about Washington's clandestine meeting. "The officials today, all four of them, tried to even up a football game. … If it was intended to be an instructional clinic, a representative of Notre Dame should have been invited. I believe the entire procedure tended to send the officials into the game with a superficial attitude." The two teams don't meet against until 46 years later. 50 Years Ago: Oct. 3, 1964 In Ara Parseghian's home debut as Notre Dame's foot- ball coach, the Irish snap a record five-game losing streak at home to Purdue (1954-62) with a 34-15 victory. Notre Dame falls behind 7-0 after the opening pos- session when Purdue quarterback Bob Griese leads a 75-yard touchdown march. Irish safety Tom Longo then picks off two passes to help set up a 14-7 Notre Dame halftime lead. The game breaks open in the third quarter when sopho- more tackle Kevin Hardy blocks a Purdue punt that fellow sophomore Alan Page returns for a 57-yard touchdown. Senior captain Jim Carroll is credited with 21 tackles at linebacker. 15 Years Ago: Oct. 2, 1999 Fifth-year senior quarterback Jarious Jackson becomes the first — and still lone — Notre Dame quarterback to pass for at least 200 yards and rush for at least 100 in a game during Notre Dame's 34-30 comeback victory in the rain at home versus first-year head coach Bob Stoops' Oklahoma Sooners. Anniversaries In Notre Dame Athletics History: Sept. 30-Oct. 6 Quarterback Jarious Jackson passed for 276 yards and rushed for 107 in the 34-30 victory versus Oklahoma in 1999.
