Getting To Know … FRESHMAN DEFENSIVE LINEMAN ANDREW TRUMBETTI ✦ GIMME FIVE On Oct. 18, Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston represented the 31st different Heis- man Trophy winner to face Notre Dame at some point in his collegiate career (the award was first bestowed in 1935). The Fighting Irish entered that contest with an eight-game losing streak versus Heisman winners, starting with Colorado's Rashaan Salaam in the 1995 Fiesta Bowl. The other defeats to Heisman winners since then were Eddie George (Ohio State, 1996), Charles Woodson (Michigan, 1997), Eric Crouch (Nebraska, 2000), Carson Palmer (USC, 2002), Matt Leinart (USC, 2004), Reggie Bush (USC, 2005) and Troy Smith (Ohio State, 2006 Fiesta Bowl). Overall, Notre Dame had defeated 14 Heisman Trophy winners — but only five in the year they won the award. For example, the Irish defeated Palmer's USC teams in 2000-01, but not in 2002 when he was the Heisman recipient. Here are the five winners Notre Dame defeated the year they received the honor. Player (School) Year (Score) 1. Billy Vessels (Oklahoma) 1952 (27-21) 2. Ernie Davie (Syracuse) 1961 (17-15) 3. Mike Garrett (USC) 1965 (28-7) 4. Earl Campbell (Texas) 1977 (38-10, Cotton Bowl) 5. Charlie Ward (Florida State) 1993 (31-24) MOVING? Let our customer service department know your new address!
