IN THE TRENCHES ANDREW OWENS
T
he brief moment will live for
ages.
For an instant, it appeared
Notre Dame had accomplished what
no other team had in the previous 22
tries against Florida State: The Irish
had won.
Sophomore wide receiver Corey
Robinson caught senior quarterback
Everett Golson's pass in the flat and
backpedaled into the end zone for the
go-ahead score with 13 seconds left on
the clock.
Seconds later, an official threw a flag
to nullify the score. One play later, the
Seminoles intercepted Golson's des-
perate fourth-down toss.
Game over.
The finish had all the makings of
the 2005 "Bush Push" loss to USC, the
most recent time Notre Dame played
the No. 1 team in the land.
"I don't know if I can give you a
word to describe the feeling," senior
linebacker Joe Schmidt said.
After a final kneel-down by the
Seminoles, the clock ticked to zero.
Golson wandered off the field with a
cameraman shooting photos of him
on one side and a police officer on the
other, escorting him to Notre Dame's
locker room.
Notre Dame Belongs
Among Nation's Elite
Despite the loss, Notre Dame senior quarterback Everett Golson and his teammates proved they could
compete with the elite of the college football world.
