That harder work will start on the defensive end, and then the goals will come on the offensive end. "I just have to focus a little more on my defense," Hinostroza said. "That's going to lead to offense, and that's something I didn't do very well the last few games. "If you play good defense, it's go- ing to cause transitions and odd-man breaks. It's going to cause more scoring chances. If I play better defense, I'm going to have better offense, too." ✦ Irish Roundup MEN'S SOCCER (7-3-2 OVERALL, 3-1-1 ACC) The No. 9 Fighting Irish snapped a two-game losing streak and began a two-game winning streak with a 3-2 overtime win over Louisville Oct. 10. Four days later, the Irish knocked off regional foe Northwestern 1-0. Junior midfielder Patrick Hodan scored the game-winner in each game, raising his season total to four goals, with tallies in three straight contests. WOMEN'S SOCCER (9-4-1, 4-2 ACC) The No. 24 Irish delivered a five-goal onslaught to beat Miami 5-0 in a conference match Oct. 12. MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING Notre Dame swept the 50th annual Dennis Stark Relays Oct. 10, winning all 12 events against Olivet Nazarene, giving new head coach Matt Tallman his first career victory in his first career meet. WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING The Irish finished second, out of four teams, at the Dennis Stark Relays. Ohio State took first place. Fifteen different swimmers or divers contributed to a relay team that finished either first or second. SOFTBALL Notre Dame finished its fall exhibition season with two victories Oct. 12, a 6-2 win over Loyola and a 3-1 victory over Butler. The Irish posted a 6-1 fall record. VOLLEYBALL (4-13, 1-5 ACC) Notre Dame's rough season continued with two 3-0 losses over the weekend of Oct. 10, at Pittsburgh and at Louisville. The losses marked the fifth and sixth defeats in seven matches. The Irish have lost nine of their last 10 sets. MEN'S GOLF Notre Dame finished ninth in the Rod Myers Invitational Oct. 12 in Durham, N.C. Matthew Rushton led the Irish with a second-place finish at five-under-par.
