During his first two and a half seasons at Virginia, Mike Moore has demonstrated the ability to rush quarterbacks and chase down ball carriers from behind. As a senior at DeMatha Cath- olic High, he was ranked No. 50 on the MaxPreps Top 100 Foot- ball Recruits List, and he was tabbed as the No. 11 defensive end in the nation by Rivals.com. Ironically, Moore's first love was basketball and not football. But he admitted that once his friends in his hometown of Hy- attsville, Md., started playing football, he decided to give it a shot. "I fell in love with the game," he said. Other college coaches also "fell in love" with Moore; he received more than 40 scholar- ship offers. But the reason he opted to accept a scholarship from Virginia had little to do with the fact his father was an alumnus. "I felt there was a real fam- ily atmosphere at Virginia," Moore said. "I felt there were good people there and that they would take care of me." Moore gave a premonition of things to come in 2012 when he was one of only nine true first- years that season to play for the Cavaliers. My advice to student-ath- letes is: Make sure you keep your grades up so you don't have anything to worry about when you're on the field. The primary challenge fac- ing student-athletes today is: Keeping both things at a high level. By that I mean keeping your grades high and playing as well as you can on the field. The best thing about UVa is: The people. Why I chose UVa: I knew it would be a family-oriented team and I would have fun with my teammates for the rest of my life. What I like the most about football is: Tackling the quar- terback. The highlight of my ath- letic career: Playing the game against Pitt this year because I had a pretty good game (Moore recorded career highs in tack- les with six and sacks with 1.5 when Virginia beat the Panthers 24-19 Oct. 4). The most important thing I've learned from football: Growing up and being more mature. My dream vacation would be: The Bahamas. My post-college ambition is: NFL. — Mike Scandura GET READY FOR THE 2014 SEASON WWW.UVABOOKSTORES.COM
