things for these student-athletes, I would. The NCAA says 20.5 hours is the max [per week of practice], but it turns out nobody follows that. There are ways that they work around it, and if it was only us, it'd be ridiculous. I'd clean house. But it's everybody." Schlissel subsequently apologized to Hoke "for not providing [a] full pic- ture," in those remarks, clarifying on the school's website. "The university is in full compli- ance with NCAA practice-hour reg- ulations," Schlissel said. "Athletics compliance officials track countable practice hours weekly and our student- athletes are adhering to NCAA rules. "Our system is designed to identify and correct problems quickly and ad- dress them before they become repeti- tive problems. There are other athletic- related activities that occur that are not counted toward practice hours such as leadership and time-management training. Time spent on medical treat- ment and study hall are other areas not counted. "A number of students choose to work out or train on their own time, outside of coach-run and organized practices. Sometimes these may be re- ferred to as 'captain's practices.' No coaches can be present, unless permit- ted under NCAA safety regulations. And that time is not counted, either. And yet, these are real time demands on student-athletes." The new president, as noted, is quickly discovering how big football remains on his campus.
