M ichigan basketball hung its third banner in three years Nov. 15, this one for the 2013-14 Big Ten cham- pionship. As head coach John Beilein noted before the game, it would have been four had the Wolverines made their free throws down the stretch in a home loss to Indiana in the finale two years ago. Beilein passed out rings to his play- ers, managers and coaches before U- M's 92-68 victory over Hillsdale in the season opener; parents of former Wolverines Mitch McGary, Jordan Morgan and Nik Stauskas were on hand to receive them for their sons. Beilein had the team and family gather around the banner before it was raised to the Crisler Center roof, allowed a few photos and then coached his team to a season-opening win. The Maize Rage student section was also part of the unveiling. "We worked with the adminis- tration on that," Beilein said. "[The Maize Rage] has waited in the cold, been at every game … today they were in the upper bleachers." They deserved to be part of it, he said, just like the long-suffering Mich- igan basketball fans that have stuck with the program deserve the winner Beilein's given them. There was only one message, Beilein said, when he was handing out the Big Ten championship rings to his kids. "It was, 'Let's do this again,'" he said. "That's so important that we have this vision to compete for cham- pionships.
