UNDER THE DOME WALLY MOORE: 1924-2014 Former Notre Dame assistant coach Wally Moore died Dec. 6 at the age of 90. The LaPorte, Ind., native served under head coach Ara Parseghian from 1966-74, first as the freshman coach and then the offensive line. Named the National High School Coach of the Year in 1963 while at South Bend's St. Joseph High — just across the road from Notre Dame — and then winning the mythi- cal Indiana state title the following year, Moore was hired in 1966 by Parseghian to coach the freshman team (freshman eligibility wasn't permitted until 1972). Moore was promoted to assistant offensive line coach in 1969 under Jerry Wamp- fler, and when Wampfler accepted the head coaching position at Colorado State the next season, Moore was elevated to offensive line coach with Brian Boulac. In those five seasons from 1970-74, Notre Dame was 47-8 (.854) and never averaged less than 232.1 yards rushing per game, high- lighted by the all-time Irish record 350.2 per game during the march to the 1973 national title. After Parseghian's final season at Notre Dame in 1974, Moore became the offensive line coach in 1975-76 on Lee Corso's staff at Indiana University. He spent two additional seasons as an Indiana associate athletics director, served as a scout for the NFL Denver Broncos and worked for Ara Parseghian Enterprises in South Bend. After serving in World War II, Moore graduated in 1949 from St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Ind., and earned a master's degree from Indiana University. The Notre Dame Monogram Club awarded him an honorary monogram in 1997. In 1993, the Moose Krause Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame presented him with its Contributions to Football Award. — Lou Somogyi 2015 Notre Dame Football Packages Sept. 5 Texas Sept. 19 Georgia Tech Sept. 26 UMass Oct. 10 Navy Oct. 17 USC Nov. 14 Wake Forest A Notre Dame trip makes A GREAT GIFT: Birthday, Father's Day, Graduation, Christmas, Retirement All details at diamondtravel.com or call 602-870-9197 DIAMOND TRAVEL 27 years in business Notre Dame PaNoramic Puzzle Blue & Gold Illustrated P.O.
