UNDER THE DOME Irish student-athletes excelling on the field and in the classroom Robbie Russo — Hockey In a four-point Hockey East weekend, the fifth-year senior defenseman sparked Notre Dame on both nights. His three consecutive third-period assists flipped a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 Irish lead en route to a 7-5 road win over Massachusetts Dec. 5. A night later, he both opened and closed Notre Dame's scoring in a 4-0 victory over the Minutemen. For the weekend, Russo notched a plus-five, tied with freshman linemate Jordan Gross for best on the team. Through 18 games, he had a team-high 17 points (seven goals and 10 assists). Emilee Koerner — Softball Notre Dame named the two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American a co-captain for the upcoming season, along with senior Jenna Simon. Koerner, also a senior, set single- season school records last season with 28 doubles and 65 runs scored. She enters her final campaign with a career batting average of .401, which stands as the best in program history. Nick Besler — Soccer The National Soccer Coaches Association of America named the senior midfielder a second-team All-American. Besler's final campaign may have fallen short of defending Notre Dame's national title, but he still led the Irish to the regional semifinals. Besler played every single minute this season, finishing with one goal and two assists. Junior midfielder Patrick Hodan earned first-team All-America honors, thanks to his nine goals and three assists in 2014. Allison Casareto — Swimming & Diving The senior diver led a dominating Irish diving performance at the Hawkeye Invitational Dec. 5-7. Casareto won both the one- and three-meter dives, snapping the meet record in the one- meter. Junior Emma Gaboury finished third in the three-meter dive and fourth in the one-meter, while junior Lindsey Streepey claimed three second-place finishes. TOP OF THE CLASS
