ment, we decided the night before to go to the championship game against Duke," Scott said. "We bought tickets the next morning, and I drove down to Greensboro with my son, Will, to see the game." To say that Scott and Will were rewarded for that spontaneous decision would be an understatement since the Cavaliers beat the Blue Devils, 72-63. Two weeks later, the whole Rivas family drove to Raleigh to watch the Wahoos beat Memphis in the NCAA Tournament. Will Rivas is a high school senior while younger brother Jack is a sophomore. "Both are big UVa fans," their father said. "Our daughter, Daly, is a junior at Clemson. However, as long as UVa isn't playing Clemson, she still roots for Virginia." The Rivas family has supported the VAF for 21 consecutive years through the annual fund and capital projects like the George Welsh Indoor Practice Facility. "When Scott and I were in college, we went to every home football and basketball game," Meg said. "After we graduated, Scott worked in Atlanta for four years and I was in law school at Georgia. "We moved to Richmond in 1990. We wanted to give back to the university and decided contribut- ing to the VAF would be one of the best ways to do that." Meg noted one reason for being a VAF donor is that the overall caliber of student attracted to Virginia is exceptional. "In terms of the VAF, it's magnified further in that the quality of athletes we have is tremendous," she said. "They're students first and athletes second." — Mike Scandura The Rivas family, from left to right: Jack, Caitlin (class of '14), Meg (class of '86), Scott (class of '86), Daly and Will.
