injury. Brown, meanwhile, just like he had done during Virginia's run to the 2013 College Cup, came up huge. The redshirt fourth-year made six saves, in- cluding several crucial ones down the stretch, to keep the Cavaliers within striking distance. In the postgame press conference, Gelnovatch's relief was palpable. "This is a very difficult team to play against," he said. "It's like a fifth-division English team — big and strong. The worst thing you can do is give up a goal and now they're very, very resolute on defending and countering." Gelnovatch had told his players at halftime that if they could just score once, they would win the game. "I felt like the one would just break them a little bit," he said. Gelnovatch was happy that Madison was able to get into the scoring column. "What a way to do it — to win it for our team," Gelnovatch said, "but also for him to get his confi- dence going." Unfortunately, Madison's ankle would never re- ally allow him to regain his conditioning. The Phila- delphia native, one of the team's most dangerous offensive players, was only a shell of himself as the season progressed. Virginia got a little momentum going in Novem- ber, though. The Cavaliers won four in a row, capped by a 1-0 home victory over Duke. In the 82nd minute, Brown made two spectacular saves on Bryson Asher, On the first, he lunged to his right to deflect a shot wide. On the second, he leaped into the air to punch an Asher attempt over the crossbar. Virginia played without Madison, who had to sit out after picking up a red card against George Ma- son. Gelnovatch started second-year forward Sam Hayward in his place and also inserted fourth-year forward Kyle McCord into the opening unit.
