FOOTBALL RECRUITING BY TIM SULLIVAN T he University of Michigan has al- ways focused on building around the best talent in the Midwest. Local quarterback Drew Henson of Brigh- ton (Mich.) High and cornerback Charles Woodson of Fremont (Ohio) Ross were five-stars in the 1998 and 1995 classes, respectively. Despite that, Florida, Texas and California are considered prime recruiting territory on the gridiron, and the Wolverines have succeeded hitting those areas as well. Some of the greatest Wolverines in recent memory have headed to Ann Arbor from hotbeds very far from the Great Lakes State. Wide receiver Anthony Carter of Riviera Beach (Fla.) High was U-M's all-time re- ceiving yardage leader from midway through his junior year in 1980 until Braylon Edwards passed him in 2004. Quarterback Tom Brady of San Ma- teo (Calif.) Gardena Serra was a two- year starter in Ann Arbor — and has since become one of the NFL's great- est passers. Defensive tackle Chris Hutchinson of Houston Cypress Creek was an All-America selection and the team's MVP in 1992. Under former head coach Brady Hoke, Michigan focused on locking down the Midwest while picking and choosing players from around the country to fill out classes. Under Jim Harbaugh, U-M will look nationally first while augmenting with the best players closer to home. California With Harbaugh's connections to the Golden State — he spent three years coaching at the University of San Diego, four at Stanford and four with the San Francisco 49ers — the Wolverines project to be major play- ers in California in the coming years.
