COMMITMENT PROFILE
on the floor and finish with a flush,
and it's clear even on film he loves
the game.
Most Americans, of course, want to
compare him to the best of the best in
German Dirk Nowitzki, a multiple
year All-Star with the Dallas Maver-
icks. Both have skills and great shoot-
ing touch.
Wagner is not Nowitzki, however,
and while the NBA is Wagner's goal,
the 18-year-old realizes how far he
still has to go. He averaged 17.0
points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists and
2.0 steals per game while shooting
61 percent on twos and 30 percent on
triples in the NBBL (German youth
league). He also averaged 9.6 points
and 5.4 rebounds during the Adidas
Next Generation U18 Tournament,
helping Alba Berlin to a third-place
finish.
"I'm not satisfied at all," he said.
"[Comparisons to Nowitzki] are
dangerous. Dirk is awesome, and
the American and European level of
playing is different."
Being so highly regarded by the
NBA scouts is humbling, he added.
"It is so unreal and big for me. I am
so blessed," he said. "It is awesome,
but brings me nothing. I just can go
back to the gym tomorrow, and this
is all I do."
That fits perfectly with the team
Beilein and his staff have assembled,
a group that can't get enough basket-
ball. Wagner met them on his visit
and blended like one of the guy. Soon
he will be one of them, and he's anx-
ious to get started.
