CAVS FOR LIFE SPOTLIGHT: TYLER WILSON Tyler Wilson is a 2011 UVa graduate and former starting pitcher on the baseball team. He has con- tinued his career in baseball, playing professionally in the Baltimore Orioles organization. Wilson, who was a part of the 2009 and 2011 College World Series teams, won the Lowe's Senior CLASS award in 2011, an award that goes to a senior student-athlete competing at the NCAA Division I level who best embodies community, classroom, character and competition. He was recently called up to Baltimore from the organization's triple A affiliate team, the Norfolk Tides. He feels he's where he is today because of his time at UVa, "My experience at UVa shaped every bit of the person I am today. It gave me the chance to develop not only as a student- athlete but as a man. Through adversity and opportunity I learned how to take advantage of every day and reach my potential," Wilson said. A biology major with medical school ambitions, Wilson still found time to be involved in the UVa and Charlottesville communities. He served as a Student-Athlete Mentor (SAM) for his third and fourth years; was a member of Athletes in Action, an on campus ministry for student-athletes; participated in ACE (Ath- letes Committed to Education), a program that emphasizes the importance of education to youth in the surrounding Charlottesville area; and made the All-ACC Academic team multiple times. Since joining the club in Baltimore, Wilson feels that his experience at UVa is what has allowed him to achieve much of his success. Now a donor to the Virginia Athletics Foundation, Wilson noted the importance of giving back for him, "UVa gave me everything I am as a person, it gave me the life that I have today – my career in professional baseball, my wife, my home, unbelievable experiences and my best friends. I want those who attend UVa after me to enjoy it as much as I did. Giving back as a student-athlete makes a statement. It says I am thankful for all that I was given during my time here, I believe in the mission of the University and Uncompromised Excellence, and I want to ensure that every opportunity is available for the student-athletes at UVa today and those to come." 2015-16 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS Recipients of endowed scholarships are announced at the annual All-Sports Banquet in May.
