As you may have heard and read about, the NCAA has adopted the increased value of a full athletics scholarship up to the cost of attendance or COA beginning August 1, 2015 for the 2015-16 academic year. What exactly does that mean? To begin with, we need to define what the former value of a full scholarship included. Through the 2014-15 academic year, a full scholarship student-athlete received: tuition and fees, room, board and books. Beginning in the 2015-16 academic year, a full scholarship student- athlete will receive the COA. The COA is an amount calculated by UVa's Student Financial Services Office (SFS), using federal regulations for all students which include: tuition and fees, room, board, books and now monies for supplies, miscellaneous and personal expenses and travel ex- penses. Each institution will publish what it has calculated to be the COA for all students at their institution each year and its student-athletes can receive that amount if the institution chooses to offer it. Below is a breakdown of the new COA pieces and the benefits undergraduate UVa student-athletes will receive: Supplies – $470 Personal and Miscellaneous – $2,340 Travel Ranges based on residency – $370-$1,640 In total, the value of a full scholarship for a returning in-state student-athlete will be $27,856 and will range for an out-of-state student-athlete from $58,442 to $59,422.
