Quin Blanding ◆ Football The second-year from Virginia Beach, Va., was one of 27 student-athletes named to the preseason All-ACC team voted on by the media in late July. He was also listed on the watch lists for the Bednarik (top defensive player), Nagurski (top defensive player) and Thorpe (top defensive back) awards after being named the league's Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2014, when he finished second in the ACC with 123 tackles. The Freshman All-American even earned preseason All-America laurels from Athlon Sports (third team) and Phil Steele's (fourth team), while Sporting News named him the league's hardest hitter in its annual football preview magazine. Maggie Bowman-Jones ◆ Rowing The Cavs' varsity four captured the NCAA title May 31 in Gold River, Calif., and the fourth-year was a crucial part of the victory, working at the stroke. The win helped pave the way for a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, and the boat also won the ACC race earlier in the month, which helped the squad claim their sixth straight league crown. Bowman-Jones was named second-team All-ACC and the final race came in her home state. Becky Sauerbrunn ◆ Soccer The 2006 graduate was one of three with UVa ties on the U.S. Women's National Team that won the 2015 World Cup in July, along with recent graduate Morgan Brian and head coach Steve Swanson, who served as an assistant on the staff. Both Sauerbrunn and Brian were starters for the squad, which captured America's third gold medal in the event. Five Cavs have earned World Cup roster spots in program history — Amanda Crom- well (1995), Lori Lindsey (2011) and Angela Hucles (2003 and '07) are the others. Josh Sborz ◆ Baseball Selected as the Most Outstanding Player at the College World Series after tossing 13 scoreless innings in Omaha, Sborz led the way for five Virginia selections on the NCAA All-College World Series team. He picked up three wins and a save in the team's five victories at the CWS, becoming just the second to do so in the history of the event. He threw an incredible 77 pitches in four innings out of the bullpen in the penultimate contest that forced a winner-take-all game against Vanderbilt, and ended his career on a 27-inning scoreless streak. After being drafted with the No. 74 overall pick in the MLB Draft, he bypassed his final year of eligibility and signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
