FANTASTIC FINISH
The UVa varsity four boat — from left to right: fourth-
year stroke Maggie Bowman-Jones, second-year three-
seat Marijane Brennan, third-year two-seat Hannah So-
lis-Cohen, second-year bow Ellen Pate and fourth-year
coxswain Julia Roithmayr — claimed the national title
in a very close race, finishing in a time of 7:12.760, just
ahead of Yale (7:12.920) and Brown (7:13.070). The Cava-
liers led throughout the race on Lake Natoma in Gold
River, Calif., fending off multiple Brown attacks before
holding off the Bulldogs and the Bruins at the finish line.
"It was the best fours race I have ever seen at the NCAA
Championships," head coach Kevin Sauer said. "Having
it that tight all the way down the course was incredible.
We got the win barely in front of Yale and Brown, but
we did what we had to do. I am very happy for Julia and
Maggie to end their careers with a national title."
UVa has now captured more varsity four titles than any
other school (five; 2004, '05, '07, '10 and '15) — eclipsing
Brown and Washington, which have both won the event
four times each — and has a grand total of nine boat
national championships all time.
