UNDER THE DOME
Irish student-athletes excelling
on the field and in the classroom
Katie Higgins — Volleyball
The junior middle blocker and team co-captain recorded
10 kills, two service aces, two digs and four blocks to
help the Irish to a 3-1 win over Middle Tennessee State
Aug. 30. The native of Kearney, Neb., who enjoyed a
breakout season in 2014, earned a spot on the Blue
Raider Bash all-tournament team by compiling 43 kills,
11 blocks and six service aces over three matches — all
team highs.
Matthew Rushton — Golf
The junior from Cape Town, South Africa, captured
medalist honors at the 2015 Kickoff Challenge Aug. 30 at
the Warren Golf Course. He fired back-to-back rounds of
68 to finish with a 6-under-par score of 136 — two strokes
ahead of the runner-up — and helped the Irish tie for
second in the team competition. The first-place showing
was the first of Rushton's Irish career.
Thomas Ueland — Soccer
The freshman midfielder from Lexington, Ky., made
the most of his first collegiate goal, scoring in the 109th
minute to lead the then-No. 4 Irish to a 1-0 victory at
then-No. 14 Indiana Aug. 30. The marker by the former
NSCAA high school All-American and the Kentucky Player
of the Year was also the first of the season for the Irish,
who opened the season with a 0-0 draw versus Maryland
Aug. 28.
Glory Williams — Soccer
The senior midfielder and team tri-captain delivered
the game-winning goal with 9:10 remaining in then-No. 7
Notre Dame's 2-1 triumph over Santa Clara Aug. 28. The
Dallas native entered her final season in blue and gold
with one career goal, but found the back of the net twice
during the Fighting Irish's 4-0 start to the 2015 campaign.
