INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS MAIZE AND BLUE NOTEBOOK SOFTBALL ADDS VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT Carol Hutchins' softball program has added a new volunteer coach in Alex Lagesse, a former pitching great at Valparaiso University. "Alex is a great addition to our staff," Hutchins said. "She brings a great blend of experience and youthful enthusiasm, and we are excited to have her here in Ann Arbor." Lagesse, the career record holder in pitching wins and strikeouts at Valparaiso, coached at Saint Joseph's College in Indiana and then coached last season at Valparaiso. "I am excited to be in an environment where I can continue to learn from people who have such a passion for the game," Lagesse noted of her move to Michigan. "I am looking forward to getting started and taking the skills that I learn and giving back to the student-athletes that I have the opportunity to work with." Former Michigan player Nikki Nemitz moves from volunteer coach to become Hutchins' director of softball operations. FERLIC LEADS THE WAY FOR WOLVERINES Cross country runner Mason Ferlic, a senior co-captain, helped the 11th- ranked Wolverines to a flying start on their season, winning the 5,000-meter EMU Celebration at nearby Eastern Michigan in 14:56.1 Sept. 5. Ferlic, expected to pace the Wolverines all season, proved the only runner to crack the 15-minute mark. MEN'S BASKETBALL TV TIMES GIVEN Michigan men's basketball fans plotting out their television watching for the winter and spring months enjoyed another round of information recently. ESPN and CBS Sports announced upcoming Michigan contests on the air. The Wolverines will be on ESPN seven times this year, including three "Super Tuesday" appearances. Up to three U-M contests will be on CBS. The network will televise the show- down between Michigan and Michigan State at Crisler Arena Feb. 6, and could also opt for Michigan at Maryland Feb. 21 and Michigan at Wisconsin Feb. 28.
